SISTER’S KEEPER INITIATIVE
In 2023, I partnered with Janet Koromah to raise awareness and gather supplies to support a worthy cause in Liberia, West Africa.
Period poverty refers to the lack of access to menstrual hygiene products, adequate sanitation facilities, and education surrounding menstruation, primarily due to financial constraints. This widespread issue affects individuals worldwide, hindering their ability to manage menstruation with dignity and comfort. The repercussions of period poverty extend beyond hygiene concerns, impacting mental health, educational opportunities, and overall well-being. For many, the inability to afford or access sanitary products results in missed school or work days, perpetuating a cycle of disadvantage. Addressing period poverty involves not only providing essential menstrual products but also implementing sustainable solutions, advocating for policy changes, and promoting education to eradicate the stigma surrounding menstruation. Efforts to alleviate period poverty are crucial to ensure that everyone has equitable access to resources necessary for proper menstrual health and overall empowerment!
The Sister’s Keeper Initiative aims to empower young girls in Liberia by providing health education, job skills training and feminine hygiene products at no cost. Last year we were able to help 500 girls and we intend to help many more in the years to come. Every May, during Menstrual Health Awareness month I pledge to host a drive to collect hygiene products to send to Liberia to help girls in need. If you’d like to donate feel free to contact me or sign up for alerts so you can hear about this year’s hygiene drive.
